PD: THE WAR AT HOME
WHY TEAM FOX? by Madison Lyleroehr
My late grandmother was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease six years ago. Like most people, I had no idea what that meant. Before long, I could see that it took most of her energy to battle the disease, and my mother explained that Grandma was basically wearing herself out.
Imagine how we felt when my mother was diagnosed a year later.
But here's where the hopeful part comes in.
Although my grandmother died in May 2006, my mother continues to actively battle the disease and is even able to continue her career as a university professor. Her future depends on aggressive research -- which is exactly what The Michael J. Fox Foundation makes happen. She talks about PD to everyone she knows, and she even has an inspirational quote from Michael on her Facebook page!
Having seen the effects of PD in my grandmother and mother -- as well as in my lifelong vocal coach, who was diagnosed just last week -- I decided to do something personally meaningful to benefit Team Fox. I'm a professional vocalist as well as a college student. So last summer, I released a CD of classic Christmas songs accompanied by a Celtic harp, and donated all proceeds to MJFF. The project is ongoing, so if you're interested, please go to my website at madisonsings.com and follow the links.
But most of all, please remember how critically important it is that we all keep educating the public about this disease, keep it "front and center" -- and do whatever we can to support Team Fox. No effort is too small. Like Michael and my mother, I believe that by working together and by never giving up, we WILL find a cure!
